Psalm 86 is a portrait of a child asking his parent for help. David’s needs, though the specifics are unknown to us, are real and raw. One thing we do know: he needs God. In the midst of his suffering, he is waiting for the Lord’s response to his pleas. And there is confidence in his words here, even though the Lord has not responded to him by the time the song concludes. Why? Because David knows that it isn’t simply that we ask anyone for help, but that he is (as we should) asking God whose works are incomparable and who is glorious beyond compare. This song in struggle points us to the only true and abiding source of strength.
